Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP)
CEOP have produced new online safety resources to support families: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents has been updated and features a range of articles and guidance on how to protect children from abuse online.Safeguarding on Facebook
In April 2014, the Chief Executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre Jim Gamble, met with representatives of Facebook to raise concerns about the safety of many of their young users and to highlight the lack of reports to UK police from the Facebook environment.
This position was supported by senior colleagues across UK policing, many of whom put their name to a letter from ACPO calling on Facebook to place the ‘ClickCEOP’ button on the profile page of all its users. This step would undoubtedly make Facebook a safer environment by enabling children to access help and advice about online safety and to make a report directly to CEOP if necessary.
While Facebook were initially unwilling to embed the ‘ClickCEOP’ button in the site, CEOP and Facebook have now developed an application which will enable users to download the button and place it within their profiles. While this stops short of the original request for the button to appear automatically within all user profiles, it nonetheless has the potential to make young people safer in this environment.
Everyone with Facebook pages and profiles are encouraged to add the ClickCEOP app to their profiles – visit www.facebook.com/ceop to do this. This app will give Facebook users direct access to advice and guidance should they ever need it, as well as a link to report concerns directly to CEOP. The app is now live in the Facebook environment.
