This national award recognises our commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels safe, valued and able to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances.
As a School of Sanctuary, we celebrate diversity, promote understanding and encourage our students to show kindness, compassion and respect for others. We are committed to ensuring everyone feels they belong within our school community.
What is Schools of Sanctuary?
Schools of Sanctuary is a national network of schools committed to creating a culture of welcome, belonging and inclusion for everyone.
The award recognises schools that help students, staff and the wider community understand why people seek sanctuary and the experiences of refugees and people seeking asylum. Schools work to ensure that everyone is welcomed with kindness, treated with respect and given the opportunity to succeed.
At Harper Green School, these values are embedded throughout school life and reflected in our curriculum, assemblies, Personal Development programme and wider school community.
Our Commitment
As a School of Sanctuary, we are committed to three key principles:
- Learn - We help students develop an understanding of why people seek sanctuary and encourage them to learn about different cultures, communities and experiences through our curriculum, assemblies and wider school life.
- Embed - We promote a culture of welcome, inclusion and respect throughout our school, ensuring that kindness, equality and belonging are reflected in our policies, curriculum and everyday interactions.
- Share - We work with our students, families and the wider community to celebrate diversity, raise awareness and share good practice, helping to create a welcoming environment for everyone.
Understanding the Terminology
What is an asylum seeker?
An asylum seeker is someone who has left their home country because they are no longer safe and has asked for protection in another country. Their application for asylum is still being considered.
What is a refugee?
A refugee is someone whose asylum application has been accepted and who has been granted protection by the UK Government.
How Can Students Support Newcomers?
Everyone can play a part in helping others feel welcome. Students are encouraged to:
- Welcome new students with a smile and introduce themselves
- Invite someone new to join them at break, lunchtime or in lessons
- Take an interest in different cultures, languages and traditions
- Respect that some people may not wish to talk about difficult experiences
- Include everyone in activities, clubs and games
- Offer encouragement to students who are learning English
- Report any concerns or incidents of bullying to a trusted member of staff
Small acts of kindness can make a significant difference in helping someone feel welcome, valued and included.

Being a School of Sanctuary is about more than achieving an award – it is a commitment that is reflected throughout school life.
